The grease in the reservoir is kept under pressure — for example by a follower plate or a pressurising arrangement — so that it is continuously urged toward the outlet. As the system draws grease, the pressure keeps the supply gap-free, preventing the air pockets that would otherwise cause a pump to lose prime or a line to run dry. When the reservoir is refilled, the same pressurising arrangement re-establishes a solid, air-free column of grease.
